gender equity in sports is a weird topic, because, like… you can’t make people care about women’s sports. the thing that makes sport lucrative is that people care about it; and while the lack of interest in women’s sports may be due to gender discrimination, it’s downstream of cultural factors you can’t actually alter. decades of title ix has given the US, at least, a much more equitable landscape for collegiate athletics, but 1) collegiate athletics in the US is a cultural vortex of awfulness and should probably all be abolished, and 2) that doesn’t translate into equal prestige (or, more importantly, equal funding!) for professional women’s athletics.

women’s sports leagues were a mistake. sports are for idiots and women deserve their own good thing instead of “fine, have a copy of filthy bros’ evil hobby that should be destroyed”

hmm. this strikes me as an unhinged and excessively mean-spirited take. sports are morally neutral. some people care about them a lot! i don’t, and i find them kind of mystifying, but that has more to do with my own interests and proclivities growing up than, like, an inherent property of sport. sport is not an evil hobby. it’s just people playing games, which is fine. i think it’s bad that it cannibalizes so much time and attention and funding of educational institutions in the united states, and that those institutions exploit the hell out of their student athletes, because they make money off of them. and i think some specific sports, like american football and boxing, are much too dangerous to continue to be played in anything like their current form (CTE is by all accounts a pretty awful disease!).

but a lot of people like sports and are good at them, and saying a source of joy for so many people should be destroyed because you personally don’t enjoy it is just being an asshole. and claiming sports has some intrinsic misogynistic or evil telos is weird. there’s nothing about kicking a ball around for fun or profit that inherently makes you a bad person.

lol i hate today’s era of absolutely zero nuance takes. a friend didn’t behave exactly as you’d wanted them to? cut them off. a guy didn’t text you back instantly bc he has his own life? he’s just giving you breadcrumbs. doing something makes you uncomfortable? don’t do it anymore. someone isn’t instantly available for you? disinterest. just absolutist statements that often don’t apply to the multilayer situations of everyday life. like. stop. literally just stop it
